Is it normal to have diarrhea the whole time your on amoxicillin? I was prescribed amoxicillin for 10 days im now on day 5 and its still giving me diarrhea, is it normal to have it the whole time your taking antibiotics? Ive tried sticking to only eating bananas and yogurt but it hasnt helped

Molly B replied: "totally normal. The antibiotics are killing all the microbes in your body-both the ones that make you sick and the "friendly" guys in your GI tract. Call your doctor's office and ask if it's o.k. to take some OTC medicine for the diarrhea. Also, try eating plain boiled rice or barley. Make sure you're staying hydrated. Within a fews days of finnishing the meds, your GI tract should correct itself."

ladyren replied: "Common. But the diarrhea doesn't stop until you stop the antibiotic.... it kills off all the good bacteria. Repopulate them with stuff like Allyn, Culturelle, and yogurt with live bacteria... however, useless until the amoxicillin treatment is over."

jjmlucky13 replied: "It is a normal side effect. One way to avoid it is to take the meds with food however some people just cannot tolerate penicillins."

thorium23x replied: "The diarrhea should be brought to the attention of your doctor. While it is true that diarrhea often follows antibiotic treatment, certain bacteria (C.diff) can cause nasty follow-up diarrhea that can be toxic and dangerous and will require a second antibiotic to cure. Every time I take antibiotics, I also start immediately using probiotics and continue taking them through the antibiotic treatment. I would also eat more than just bananas and yogurt. You are not providing any bulk for your bowel. Eat normal meals, drink plenty of water to replace what you are losing through diarrhea. Don't forget to wash your hands after cleaning up ... ya' know ..."

How can I counter diarrhea in a 5-year old from AMOXICILLIN-POT CLAVULANATE? This is an antibiotic for ear infections. My son is on day 3 of 10 of this stuff and already has mild diarrhea. Dr says to finish the medication and does not have any advice other than giving yogurt, which I do, but it doesn't help. The symptoms of ear infection are gone. Are there any pro-biotic supplements or anti-diarrheal treatment safe for 5-year old kids? Note that my son is big for his age, he weighs 52lb. Thanks!

Mischele, RN replied: "The doctor is right, you need to stick out the antibiotic. It basically kills off the 'good' bacteria in the colon and thus diarrhea happens. Make sure he's hydrated and taking in plenty of fluids so he doesn't get dehydrated. The yogurt is a good idea. There's also an OTC medication called Flora-Q that helps replenish the good bacteria. I know that in the hospital we have it in both pill and powder form that is drinkable and looks orange. If not you may be able to dissolve a tablet in some juice or pedialyte or gatorade. You may also be able to give him 1/4 to 1/2 of a chewable Immodium tablet. They taste like mint. Good luck!"

Doctor of Democracy replied: "DO NOT give a 5 year old anti-diarrheal treatment. The diarrhea is not caused by a virus or bacteria. Its caused by an aggravation of the stomach lining due to the antibiotics. You should ask your doctor for a milder antibiotic if it has cleared up. If not, just keep him hydrated and let it run it's course."

sandi replied: "there are pro-biotic things that you can give - yogurt is a good place to start. food with potasium in them (bananas and potatoes) are also helpful with slowing down the GI track"

Amoxicillin causing diarrhea? I just had my wisdom teeth removed a few days ago and I was prescribed amoxicillin and I've been experiencing diarrhea. Fortunately I've been at home so I've been able to deal with it. However, now I'm concerned because I have to return to work tomorrow and I go back to school on Tuesday and I have to take this antibiotic until Wednesday or Thursday and I really don't want to get the diarrhea at work or school. Is there something I can eat before or after I take the pill? I'm trying to avoid taking more pills so if anyone knows of foods that would help prevent it from happening, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks! Thanks for all the advice! I have some anti-diarrheal medicine. Should I take it right after I take my antibiotic or should I take it only if i get diarrhea?

gypsykitty replied: "Antibiotics can cause diarrhea in a lot of people. Also, stomch upset - etc. You could try Immodium tablets - they come in various forms - pills, chewable - (or you could get generic brands - they are cheaper.) They are sold in Pharmacies and supermarkets. and they hve minimal side effects. And they do usually , stop the diarrhea. very quickly. Sometimes with just the first dose. ------------------------- You are really only supposed to take it after you have an episode of diarrhea - however, it wouldn't hurt to take it right after you take one of the amoxicilin pills. It may prevent an episode of unexpected diarrhrea."

Samm replied: "Take some Imodium, it works well to stop the problem."

can i take Imodium if amoxicillin has given me diarrhea? thank you tiggle

tiggle replied: "u can i had the same problem and i took imodium and was fine"

Duration of side effects of Amoxicillin? My daughter was on Amoxicillin 2 times a day for 7 days for the treatment of pneumonia. She took her last dose yesterday morning. She had diarrhea, vomiting, and a yeast infection from the drug. She still has a the runs which I am sure she will for a few more days. Is it still normal for her to still have the vomiting. It is not major vomiting, but how long can this last? Yes the docotor is aware of all the effects. I just thought once she was done the vomiting would subside as well. Thank you all though. i was just wondering how much longer my little one will be miserable.

idon'tknow replied: "Contact your doctor and tell them what is going on. Anytime my children have been on Amoxicillin they have not had any vomiting."

Sunshine's Dacha replied: "Oh - I hate amoxicillin. It's amazing how it works but the side effects SUCK. Here are the side effects: * Watery or bloody diarrhea (which can occur even after you have finished the medication) * Signs of liver damage, such as yellow eyes or skin (jaundice), upper right abdominal pain, or dark urine * A vaginal yeast infection or thrush (a yeast infection of the mouth) * Seizures * Anxiety or agitation * Signs of an allergic reaction, such as: An unexplained rash Hives Itching Unexplained swelling (especially of the lips, mouth, or throat) Wheezing or other breathing problems. # Nausea and vomiting # Diarrhea # A black, hairy tongue # Hyperactivity # Insomnia # Confusion # Dizziness # Tooth discoloration. The nausea and vomiting sounds like it makes sense, and it probably won't last very long. I wish you the best!"

kpscola02 replied: "She may be allergic to the medication I would call the doctor..the diarrhea is normal because it is getting rid of the infection and the yeast infection is from the medication which I am sure you knew, but the vomiting Im not sure about that!!"

Jenny Pooh replied: "It takes up to 4 days for the effects to wear off. Be sure she doesn't have ANY alcohol as well though. Even alcohol in mouthwash or cough syrup is enough to make someone incredibly sick while on this drug. If the problems persist after 4 days definitely take her to your doctor."

What can cause body temp to rise alot when eating? For the past week i have been experiencing a low grade fever when i eat. I get real hot, flush, and sweaty and my temp is usually around 100 degrees mins after eating. I also have been having bad body aches, severe fatigue, tiredness, constant anxiety just a whole bunch of things. I am currently on amoxicillin and have diarrhea but i stayed hydrated everyday. Does this sound like symptoms of candida? what would cause blood circulation problems?

Murzy replied: "salty foods, MSG and nitrates, hot/spicy foods"

miked replied: "generaly, if your temp rises when you eat, you've got blood circ. issues. if your blood has to pump faster to help digest the food, then less will get to your brain and it will also have to work harder. making your tepurature rise. check with your doctor about your potential blood problems."

Mo replied: "It most certainly does."

Difference bewteen Amoxicillin and Penicillin? My friend's baby has his second ear infection. The first time the doctor gave him Penicillin (the white kind?) and now Amoxicillin. Why is that? Both times her son gets diarrhea and a bad rash from it. The doctor has prescribed a cream or the rash but my friend says she stops the antibiotic because the cream isn't working fast enough. This is all i know so far from speaking to her earlier, she wanted me to ask for her. Her baby 6 1/2 months old.

ᴉᴎᴋᴇᴅ ᴍᴀᴍᴀ ♥ ᴛᴛᴄ ♯² ♥ replied: "Penicillin is a broad spectrum anti biotic. Generally used when they know infection is present, but not 100% sure exactly what infection. Amoxicillin is a more specific anti biotic. Some infections do not respond to some antibiotics, that why we have specific ones. Diarohoea / constipation are really common side effects of any anti biotic, especially in kids. As for the rash - that would indicate allergy to me - is the cream an anti-histamine? Id get a second opinion, as Penicillin is a really common allergy."
